Introducing lumpy mail.
Have you ever gotten a piece of mail - sometimes from a pen company, an insurance company, anyone - that is bumpy and lumpy or in a box. Ever been curious about what's inside? Ever OPENED it?

Well, of course you have. We all have. There's something in us that makes us have to see what surprise is waiting inside.  When I was kid, I used to love Cracker Jacks because of the surprise inside the box. Was it a secret decoder ring? A tattoo? A flip book? Now, of course, the prize in the box is always a lousy little paper something-or-other. But people still like the prize and look for it in the box.
We're using the same principle this week with our lumpy mail, We're going to be sending something in an envelope that odd-shaped or bumpy, but we're hoping you're clients will open it to see what's there. And when they do, it will be a silly little poem and some candy. But there will also be your business card and the fact that your thought of them.
It's a spin-off, of course, of Brian Buffini's pop-by. But I've found most people just don't want - or have the time - to drop by their clients. So this is a darned good substitute. I'd still suggest you choose a handful of folks you know pretty well to hand deliver this little token. But mail the rest.
People sometimes feel silly about delivering such a small item. But believe me, people don't care what you're giving them. They care that you're thinking about them.
We've been using lumpy mail as a recruiting tool for several months now, and it does work. People notice and people remember. PLEASE. Try it. Trust me. I promise it won't let you down. Besides. If you can't be a little silly and whimsical in life - especially around the holidays, what fun is it?
